Student visa for Czechia, for students from Zimbabwe

For studies longer than 90 days you need a long-term visa for the purpose of studies, applied for at a Czech embassy or consulate. It is issued for up to one year. To stay longer you then extend it or apply for a long-term residence permit for study at a Ministry of the Interior office in Czechia.

The money. The formula is set by the Aliens Act and is based on the subsistence minimum, CZK 3,130 a month (the figure in force since 1 January 2023, which the Ministry of the Interior's page, updated 28 May 2026, still uses):

• 15 times the subsistence minimum for the first month: CZK 46,950
• plus twice the subsistence minimum for each further month

That gives CZK 115,810 for a full academic year (1 September to 31 August) and CZK 78,250 for one semester (September to February), which are the Ministry's own worked examples.

There is a student-specific alternative. You can submit a commitment from a public authority or a legal entity (in practice, often your university or a scholarship body) that it will cover your stay at the subsistence minimum for each month, or confirmation that the receiving school covers all study-related costs. If that commitment covers less than the full requirement, you prove the difference yourself, capped at six times the subsistence minimum (CZK 18,780).

Fee: CZK 2,500 for the long-term visa, paid at the embassy in local currency. Extensions in Czechia cost CZK 1,000.

Processing time. The embassy decision on a study visa "usually takes up to 60 days from filing the complete application". The harder part is getting an appointment. Czechia runs a fast-track called Student Mode for students from selected countries; you cannot apply to it yourself. Your university nominates you, and enrolment is decided by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. Ask your university's international office about it as soon as you have an offer.

Health insurance. You must have travel medical insurance meeting Czech conditions before the visa is issued, and comprehensive cover once you are in the country. Your embassy's checklist lists the requirements.
