The practical part

Studying in Zimbabwe: costs, visa and work rights

Checked against official sources on 7 November 2026. Every figure below says where it came from.

We re-read these official pages on a rolling basis. When one changes, the new figure is checked by a person before it appears here.

What a year costs

Tuition. Each university sets its own fees, and the University of Zimbabwe says fees may differ between local and international students and between programmes. Ask the international office for the current schedule before you accept an offer.

Study permit. USD 200, non-refundable, and USD 200 again for each yearly renewal. Midlands State University warns that a late renewal costs a USD 100 fine.

Other costs. A chest X-ray (Midlands State asks for one no more than two months old) and, at Midlands State, a police clearance.

Living costs. No official monthly student budget is published.

The study permit

Apply before you travel, at the nearest Zimbabwean embassy or mission; the University of Zimbabwe strongly recommends it. The Department of Immigration may let you apply on arrival instead: you then get a temporary permit at the border and a set time to get the full permit. Without a valid permit you can be refused entry, and the university may not register you.

The University of Zimbabwe lists:

  • the residence permit form (IF5), attested by a Commissioner of Oaths
  • your letter of acceptance and proof of accommodation
  • proof that you have paid your fees
  • a copy of your passport's data page or birth certificate
  • a chest X-ray report and two passport photos
  • the USD 200 fee

Renewal. Renew every year, within 30 days before the permit expires, with a letter confirming you are continuing and your last results. Keep the immigration receipt safe.

Working while you study

We found no official statement that students may work. Do not take a job on a study permit without checking with your university's international office and the Department of Immigration.

After you graduate

We found no post-study visa. The study permit ends with your studies.

Language

Teaching is in English. Shona and Ndebele are the most widely spoken languages.

When to apply

Apply as early as you can, so the permit is ready before registration. Universities advise leaving plenty of time for travel and visa processing.

What to watch out for

No permit, no registration. Universities will not register you without a valid permit.

Renew on time. Late renewal is fined.

Rules change. Check the official source before you rely on any figure. No national tuition figure, living-cost budget or student work rule was published in a form we could verify.

Immigration and fee rules change, sometimes at short notice and sometimes without announcement. Every figure above carries the date we checked it and a link to the official source. Check that source before you rely on it.
