Considering medicine here? The Tashkent Medical Academy says it teaches in Uzbek and Russian (tma.uz, read 7 Nov 2026), so check the language of instruction in writing before paying anyone who offers an English-taught place. Also check that your home country's medical regulator recognises the degree.

What a year costs

Tuition, an example. WIUT charges international undergraduates UZS 54,600,000 a year (about USD 4,484 at April 2026 rates) for 2026-27, and UZS 75,870,000 (about USD 6,231) for a postgraduate course. State universities set fees for foreign students as multiples of the minimum wage, so they rise when the minimum wage does; Samarkand State University's published schedule is an example. Ask your university for its current figure.

Visa fee. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs schedule is USD 160 for a single-entry visa and USD 250 for a multiple-entry visa of up to a year; extra processing fees depend on where you apply.

Living costs. No official monthly student budget is published. University dormitories are the cheapest option.

The A-1 student visa

1. Get admitted. Your university requests the visa for you and sends an invitation. 2. Apply at an Uzbek embassy or consulate. The A-1 visa is not issued through the e-visa portal. Bring your passport (valid at least three months beyond the visa), two application forms and two 35 x 45 mm photos. 3. Register your address within 3 days of arriving. New Uzbekistan University says every international student must do this; universities usually help during orientation.

The visa is issued for up to one year and renewed for the length of your studies.

Visa-free countries. Citizens of Kazakhstan, Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine can enter without a visa, and Kyrgyz and Tajik citizens for shorter stays. Those stays are short; ask your university whether you still need a student visa for a full degree.

Working while you study

The official visa pages we checked do not set a work allowance for students. Do not take a job without checking with your university's international office first.

After you graduate

We found no post-study visa. Your student visa ends with your studies.

Language

Programmes run in Uzbek, Russian or English. Check the language of instruction before you apply; Russian is widely spoken in cities.

When to apply

Most universities admit in the summer for a September start, and some international campuses have a second intake. Leave time for the invitation and the embassy appointment.

What to watch out for

Register within 3 days. Late registration is a common problem for new students.

Fees can rise mid-course. At state universities, fees tied to the minimum wage go up when it does.

Check the visa portal. Fees and visa-free rules change; confirm on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs site before you pay.
