What a year costs

Tuition. Each university sets its own fees; public and private fees differ widely. Ask your university for its schedule.

Visa fee. The Cancillería charges USD 50 to study your application, and an issue fee if it is approved. Some nationalities pay less or nothing under Colombia's fee rules.

Money to show. No fixed amount. You need a letter from the person or body paying for you and documents showing they can.

Living costs. No official monthly student budget is published.

The student visa (V Estudiante)

You can get it to study at a recognised public or private institution, with a timetable of at least 10 hours a week. The Cancillería asks for:

  • a passport with at least two blank pages and two recent 3 x 3 cm colour photos
  • your admission and proof that the institution is legally recognised
  • a letter from whoever pays for you and proof of their economic solvency
  • for scholarship holders, the scholarship documents; for internships, a certificate from the institution
  • for minors, parental authorisation

Get your foreigner ID. Universidad de los Andes says you must get a Cédula de Extranjería within 15 days of arriving, through Migración Colombia.

Working while you study

The student visa covers work practice or an internship that your programme requires. We found no general right to take other jobs on it.

After you graduate

We found no post-study visa. Working after your studies needs a different visa.

Language

Most programmes are taught in Spanish; some universities offer courses in English. Plan to study Spanish before you arrive.

When to apply

Check your university's admission dates. Apply for the visa online once you have your admission.

What to watch out for

Do not rely on a visitor stay for a degree. Over 180 days needs the student visa.

Register on time. The Cédula de Extranjería is due within 15 days.
