Strategy: Where to Spend Your Study Hours

  • If you need under 60%: you are safe - review past papers once and protect your sleep.
  • If you need 60-85%: normal final-exam preparation: 1-2 weeks of spaced review, focused on the topics with the most marks.
  • If you need 85-100%: be realistic about the risk; ask the professor what topics carry the most weight and whether any extra credit exists.
  • If you need over 100%: the target is gone - switch goals. Calculate the best grade you can still get and protect your GPA in your other courses. A planned B beats a failed A.

How the calculation works

Your course grade is a weighted average: everything so far counts for (100% − final weight), and the final fills the rest. If you have 72% going into a final worth 40%, your locked-in portion is 72 × 0.6 = 43.2 points, so a target of 80% means finding 36.8 points from the final: 36.8 ÷ 0.4 = 92% needed.

What to do with the number

Under 60% needed: normal revision wins: don't get complacent, but don't panic either. 60-85%: this is won with past papers and targeted work on weak topics over 1-3 weeks; our active recall & spaced repetition guide is exactly the method. Over 85%: talk to your instructor about where marks really come from, practise under timed conditions, and remember partial credit: showing method earns marks even on questions you can't finish.

The calculator above solves one equation, and it is worth showing rather than hiding, because once you can see it you can check the answer yourself and you can tell immediately when an input is wrong.

Everything else on this page is about the fact that the arithmetic is the easy part. The formula is never wrong. The inputs frequently are, and the rules sitting behind the inputs are almost never read.

Five rules that change the answer and are not in the formula

Where rounding happens Rounding at each component and rounding only at the end can give different answers, and the difference shows up exactly at a classification boundary, which is the only place anybody cares. An institution that reports to two decimal places is telling you it does not round early. If you are within a point of a boundary, find the rule before you plan, because this alone can decide the outcome.Whether a mark is capped A resit, a late submission or a permitted repeat may have its mark capped at the pass threshold. If so, the maximum achievable on that component is not full marks, and a target that assumed it was may be unreachable no matter what you do. The calculator has no way to know this, so it will happily return a number that is arithmetically correct and practically impossible.Minimum component marks Some modules require a pass in a specific element, typically an examination or a practical, regardless of the overall total. Under that rule a comfortable average still fails if the required component does not clear its own line. This changes what you should revise: not the thing that moves the average most, but the thing that is closest to failing its own threshold.What the weights actually are The single most common cause of a wrong answer here, and it is almost always misremembering rather than miscalculating. People recall the structure of a different module or a previous year. Take the weights from the current module handbook, in writing. Everything the calculator tells you is downstream of this one input being right.What counts towards the final award A module average and an award classification are different quantities. Institutions weight years differently, may exclude a foundation year, may allow a number of credits to be discounted, and may treat a dissertation separately. Working out what you need in a module tells you about the module. Working out what you need for a classification needs the award rules.

Where these rules live. In the module handbook and the programme regulations, usually under assessment, progression or classification. They are written for staff, which is why students rarely read them, and they answer every question above definitively. Twenty minutes there is worth more than any amount of recalculating.

When the answer is not reachable

The most valuable output of this calculation is not a target, it is the discovery that a target is impossible. That is worth knowing early rather than after the assessment, and it is a discovery people avoid making because it feels like giving up.

It is the opposite. An unreachable target means the effort you were about to spend chasing it should go somewhere it can still change something: a different module where the marks are still open, a component that is close to its own minimum, or a conversation with a tutor about whether there is a formal route you did not know about. Institutions generally have processes for circumstances that affected performance, and those processes almost always have a deadline and a requirement that you raise it at the time rather than afterwards.

The reverse case matters too. If the calculation shows you need a modest mark to reach your target, that is licence to redirect effort to a module where the marks are genuinely at risk. Working hard on something already secured is the most common way to waste a revision period.

Why a high required mark is a signal, not a target

When the answer comes back near the top of the scale, the honest reading is not that you need an exceptional performance. It is that the target was decided by work already completed, and the remaining assessment does not carry enough weight to move it.

This is a structural property of weighted averages and it is worth internalising early in a course rather than late. Weight accumulates. Each additional completed component reduces how much the remaining ones can shift the total. That is an argument for treating early assessments as though they mattered, precisely because they are the ones people treat as practice.

Using this without deceiving yourself

Two habits make the difference. First, compute the realistic case as well as the target case: what happens if you get the mark you usually get, rather than the mark you intend to get. The gap between those two is your actual risk, and it is a number worth looking at directly.

Second, recompute after every result rather than once at the start. The calculation is cheap and the inputs change. A plan built on a projection made two months ago is a plan built on information you have since replaced.

What this calculator does not do

It does not know your institution regulations, and it cannot. It does not know whether a mark is capped or whether a component has its own minimum. It does not compute an award classification, which is a different calculation over different inputs. And it does not store or transmit anything you type; it is arithmetic running in your browser, which is why you can put real marks into it.

Treat the number it gives you as arithmetic on the inputs you supplied. If an input was wrong, the answer is wrong in exactly the same proportion, confidently and without any warning.
