How GPA Is Calculated

Each letter grade maps to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0 and so on). Multiply each course grade by its credit hours, add them up, and divide by total credits:

GPA = total grade points ÷ total credit hours

A 3-credit A (12 points) pulls your GPA up more than a 1-credit A (4 points) – which is why heavy courses matter most.

Tips to Raise Your GPA

  • Prioritise high-credit courses – they move the average most in both directions.
  • Use add/drop deadlines strategically if a course is going badly early.
  • Check whether your school allows grade replacement for retaken courses.
  • Improve how you study, not just how much – see our evidence-based study techniques.
