IELTS and TOEFL are the two most widely accepted English tests for studying abroad. Both prove your English level to universities and visa authorities, but they differ in format and scoring. Here is how to choose.
What is the difference between IELTS and TOEFL?
IELTS uses a 0 to 9 band scale and includes a face-to-face speaking test with an examiner. TOEFL is scored 0 to 120 and is usually fully computer-based, with speaking recorded and marked later. Both test reading, listening, speaking and writing.
IELTS vs TOEFL scoring
As a rough comparison: IELTS 6.5 is similar to TOEFL 79 to 93, IELTS 7.0 to TOEFL 94 to 101, and IELTS 7.5 to TOEFL 102 to 109. Always check the exact requirement on each university page.
Which test do universities accept?
Most universities in the UK, Australia, Canada and the EU accept both. Some US universities prefer TOEFL. Check your destination requirements and the admissions page before booking.
Which is easier, IELTS or TOEFL?
Neither is objectively easier. IELTS suits people who prefer a live conversation and handwriting; TOEFL suits those comfortable typing and with American English. Try a free practice test of each to see which fits you.
How to choose
Pick the test your target universities accept, that is offered near you, and that matches your style, then build it into your application timeline.
