Quick answer: You can study abroad without IELTS in 2026 by (1) submitting a Medium-of-Instruction (MOI) letter from your previous school, (2) taking an alternative test like Duolingo English Test, TOEFL, PTE or Cambridge, (3) attending the university’s own English entrance test, or (4) applying to a university that has a documented IELTS waiver list. This guide covers each route.

Route 1: Medium-of-Instruction (MOI) letter

If your previous education was taught in English, ask your last school or university for an MOI letter on official letterhead. Many universities — particularly in Canada, the UK, Ireland, Cyprus, the Netherlands, Germany, Hungary and India — will accept it in lieu of IELTS. Universities of Greenwich, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire (UK), Memorial University and Cape Breton University (Canada) and most Cypriot universities accept MOI.

Route 2: Alternative English tests

Duolingo English Test (DET) is now accepted at 5,000+ universities including Yale, Columbia, NYU, University of Toronto and most Australian universities. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge English (B2 First, C1 Advanced) are accepted nearly universally. Duolingo costs USD 65 — far less than IELTS — and you take it from home.

Route 3: University’s own English assessment

Many universities run an internal English test for international applicants. Examples: the Cambridge Pre-Sessional, the LCT-IELTS placement at certain Australian institutions, and the Italian language and culture entrance tests. Check the international admissions page for an “internal test” or “English placement” route before assuming IELTS is required.

Route 4: Universities with documented IELTS waivers

Examples include: most Maltese, Cypriot and Polish public universities; Czech Republic public universities; many Italian programmes (with Italian-language testing instead); UK universities including Birmingham City, Plymouth, Northampton, Aston, Portsmouth and Robert Gordon for specific programmes; Canadian universities including Brock, Concordia (with conditions), Trent and University of Winnipeg.

What about visas?

Visa rules are a separate matter. The UK Student Route requires Secure English Language Test (SELT) for visa purposes — though if your degree was taught in English in a majority-English-speaking country, you may be exempt. Australia accepts a wider range of English evidence. Canada’s Study Permit accepts university acceptance as primary evidence. Always read the host country’s visa English-language rules in addition to the university’s.

Practical strategy

Aim for two backups: try MOI first, take Duolingo as a low-cost safety net, and only sit IELTS if a target university or visa requires it. Build a shortlist of 5 universities with no-IELTS options before assuming you must spend USD 250 and wait for a test slot.

FAQ

Will a no-IELTS admission letter be accepted by my embassy for the visa? Usually yes if the university itself is on the country’s licensed-sponsor list, but always confirm visa-side English requirements separately.

Is Duolingo really equivalent to IELTS? For most universities yes, with score conversions: DET 105 ≈ IELTS 6.5, DET 120 ≈ IELTS 7.0. Some prestigious or visa-controlled programmes still require IELTS or TOEFL specifically.
