Frequently Asked Questions

Is studying abroad for free really possible? Yes. Hundreds of thousands of international students each year complete full degrees in tuition-free countries. See five composite student paths.

Do I need to speak the local language? Sometimes. Many free programs are taught in the local language, but Germany alone offers 1,000+ English-taught Master’s. See English-taught Master’s ranking.

What does “free” actually cost in total? Plan €6,500–€14,400/year in living costs depending on country. Detailed breakdowns in the free countries guide.

Frequently Asked Questions About Free Study Abroad

Is studying abroad really free?

At public universities in over 20 countries, tuition is genuinely €0 for international students at the bachelor and master level. Living costs (rent, food, insurance) of €600–€1,400/month are still your responsibility β€” but tuition itself is zero. Countries with €0 tuition include Germany, Norway (EU/EEA), Iceland, Czech Republic (in Czech), Argentina, Greece (EU) and Slovenia.

Do I need to know German to study in Germany?

No. Over 1,500 master’s programs and 250+ bachelor programs in Germany are taught entirely in English. However, knowing B1+ German makes finding a job and integrating much easier β€” and it is mandatory for most medicine programs.

How much money do I need for a German student visa?

For 2026 the required blocked account amount is €11,904 (€992/month for 12 months). This proves you can support yourself for the first year.

Are there scholarships that cover everything?

Yes. DAAD (Germany), Erasmus Mundus, Eiffel Excellence (France), Norwegian Quota replacements, and Chevening (UK) all offer fully-funded packages covering tuition, living stipend, travel and health insurance for international students.

Can I work while studying abroad?

In most EU countries international students can work 20 hours per week during semester and full-time during holidays. The actual income (€450–€1,200/month part-time) usually covers half to all of living costs in cheaper cities.

How early should I start the application process?

18 months before your target semester. Standardised tests, language certificates, scholarship deadlines, and visa appointments all stack up β€” students who start 6 months out usually miss either the scholarships or the visa slot.
