Almost all advice about note-taking is advice about note formats. Formats are the least important part. A set of notes has exactly one job: to let you reconstruct the material later, without the lecture, without the book, and without the person who explained it. Judged against that job, most notes fail, and they fail in the same way regardless of which template they were written in.
The only test that matters
Take any page of notes you made more than a month ago. Cover it. Try to state what it was about, what the central claim was, and what would be a good exam question on it. Then uncover it and check.
If you could not do that, the notes did not work, no matter how neat they are. If you could, they worked, even if they are ugly. Everything below follows from that test, which is why this page spends more words on what notes are for than on how to rule the margins.
Why transcription fails
Writing down what was said, as close to verbatim as you can manage, feels like the safest strategy. It is the worst one, for a mechanical reason: transcription does not require you to understand anything. You can transcribe a sentence in a language you do not speak.
What makes a note useful is the work done at the moment of writing it. To compress a five-minute explanation into one line, you have to decide what the explanation was about, which is an act of comprehension. That decision is the value. A verbatim record contains all the words and none of the decisions, which is why it feels complete and reads as meaningless three weeks later.
This has a practical corollary that surprises people: notes that are missing things on purpose are usually better than complete ones. Gaps are where you did the compressing.
The laptop question, answered honestly
You have probably heard that handwriting beats typing. The claim became popular from research suggesting that students who typed tended to transcribe, while students writing by hand were forced to summarise, and that the summarisers understood more. That mechanism is sound and it matches the argument above.
But the finding has had a mixed record when others have tried to reproduce it, and the honest summary is that the device is not the cause. The behaviour is. A laptop makes transcription easy, so it invites the failure mode. It does not require it. Someone typing deliberately compressed notes is doing the same cognitive work as someone writing them.
So the useful rule is not “never use a laptop”. It is: whichever tool you use, make transcription impossible. Cap yourself to a fixed number of lines per section. Write only in your own words. Close the document and write the summary from memory at the end. If your typing speed lets you keep up with a speaker word for word, that is a warning, not an advantage.
Two genuine, separate points in favour of paper, which have nothing to do with memory: a paper notebook cannot show you a notification, and diagrams are faster by hand than in almost any software. Both are real reasons to choose it. Neither is the reason usually given.
Cornell, and the part everyone leaves out
The Cornell layout divides the page into a wide notes column, a narrow cue column on the left, and a summary strip at the bottom. Most people who say they use Cornell use the wide column and ignore the other two, which is like buying a bicycle and using it as a coat rack.
The cue column is the entire point. After the lecture, you go back and write, in that narrow column, the questions that the notes beside them answer. Later you cover the wide column and answer the questions from memory. The layout is not a formatting convention. It is a machine for converting a passive record into a retrieval test, which is the single highest-value thing you can do to notes.
The summary strip does the second job: forcing you to state the whole page in a sentence or two, which is the compression step you skipped while you were busy keeping up.

Choose the structure from the material, not from habit
Formats are not interchangeable, because different material has different shapes, and a note structure works when it matches the shape of what it is recording.
- Hierarchical material wants an outline. If the content is genuinely nested, categories containing subcategories containing examples, an indented outline records the structure for free. Law, taxonomy, and most introductory surveys are like this.
- Relational material wants a map. If the important thing is how concepts connect rather than how they nest, a linear format destroys exactly the information you need. Draw the nodes and label the arrows. Labelling the arrows is what makes it a map instead of a decoration.
- Procedural material wants numbered steps with failure modes. For anything you will have to do, record the steps in order and, next to each, what goes wrong there. The failure modes are the part you will actually need.
- Argumentative material wants claim, evidence, objection. For a paper or a seminar, capture the claim, what supports it, and the strongest objection raised. If you did not record an objection, you were not listening critically.
- Quantitative material wants worked examples, not definitions. Copy one full worked example including the step you would have got wrong, and annotate why each step follows.
The pass that makes notes worth having
Notes taken and never revisited are close to worthless, and this is where nearly everyone loses the value. Do one short pass soon after the session, while you can still repair what you did not finish writing. It takes a fraction of the original time and it is the difference between a record and a resource.
In that pass, do four things and nothing else: fill the gaps you left, write the cue questions, write the one-sentence summary, and mark the two or three things you did not understand. That last list is what you take to a supervisor or a study group, and it is far more useful than arriving with a vague sense of being lost.
Then convert them into retrieval practice
Once the cue questions exist, your notes have become a question bank, and a question bank is the input to the study method that actually works. Cover the answers, produce them from memory, and space the repetitions out over days rather than massing them the night before. The traps
- Beautiful notes. Colour-coding, rewriting neatly, and elaborate layouts feel like studying and are mostly craft. If a technique produces something pleasant to look at but no retrieval, it is a hobby.
- Highlighting. Marking text you have just read gives a strong sense of progress and involves no retrieval at all. If you highlight, treat it as a first pass that must be followed by writing something in your own words.
- Someone else notes. Reading a classmate notes gives you their compression decisions, not yours. They are useful for filling a gap and useless as a substitute.
- Recording everything. An audio recording you never listen to is a way of deferring the work indefinitely, and the work is the point.
- One giant document. If you cannot find a note, you do not have it. Whatever the system, it needs a way to get back to a specific thing.

It gives no percentage by which any method improves results, names no note-taking app, and does not tell you that one format is best. Improvement figures in this area come mostly from small studies with mixed replication records and from companies selling software, and a page that repeated them with confidence would be misleading you in a way that is hard to detect.
